After getting into law schools at Harvard University, Yale University and Stanford University, the Virginia Tech senior had to narrow it down to one.This is a rare problem, usually only seen from students who attended the best prep schools money can buy, but Kotlaba is a product of Danville Public Schools. He graduated from Galileo Magnet High School in 2008.He credits Galileo with providing him with a challenging academic environment through the International Baccalaureate program to help him thrive in college.it helped, said Kotlaba. work at a college level before you get to college gives you an advantage. Kotlaba joined some of his teachers and former classmates Tuesday for a small reunion of sorts for Galileo students. In a time of budgets cuts, talk of layoffs and general cynicism in the education system, Galileo has remained a bright spot in a rough year.On Thursday, the high school celebrates its 10 year anniversary.In 2002, the school just had seven rooms and 120 students. But now more than 250 students attend Galileo in more than 30 classrooms.Galileo was formed after the school system was awarded an $8 million grant to create a high tech school. Then interim superintendent Ralph Warren selected a group of teachers to help envision what the school would be like. One of those teachers was Kathy Shanks, who still works at Galileo.was really fun because you are given this money and told to create the perfect school, said Shanks. your mind what would the perfect school be like? The school system purchased the old Sears building and renovated it for $330,000. When Shanks first walked through the Sears building, she couldn believe this was happening.walked in the school and thought there is no way we can get this done in time, said Shanks. But in August 2002, Galileo Magnet High School opened its doors.While it was a transition for some, eventually new types of classes or strands took shape.
